Follow the Everlastings Wildflower Trail to the country town of Three Springs and lay out your picnic on a blanket of spring wildflowers. Surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside and native bushland, it's also a top spot for bird watching, so don't forget your binoculars.
Named after the local springs that were an important watering stop for early settlers and drovers, the quaint town of Three Springs is in the heart of the northern Wheatbelt, four hours north of Perth by car.
From late July to September, the countryside is a dazzling patchwork of colourful wildflowers. Hit the self-drive Everlastings Wildflower Trail to take in the full spectacle. The scenic Robinson Road-Arrowsmith River Crossing wildflower drive and Cockatoo Canyon are top local wildflower hotspots. Nearby Dookanooka National Park is another nature lover's delight, where a large stand of natural bushland creates a haven for native fauna and spring wildflowers.
For a nearer to nature experience of a feathery kind, visit Yarra Yarra Lakes, 16 kilometres south of Three Springs. This salt lake system is a unique backdrop for spotting a wide range of birdlife, including swans, pelicans, ducks and the Siberian stilt. Then drive eight kilometres east of town to explore the Pink Lakes - another unique landscape, dominated by lakes that turn crystal-pink during springtime.
While you're on the road, be sure to stop at the observation point overlooking the talc mine, which produces more than 240,000 tonnes of talc every year. As the largest mine of its kind in the southern hemisphere and the second largest in the world, it's an awesome sight.
History buffs will also enjoy a stroll along the Heritage Trail in Three Springs. Starting at the barbecue area, this mini trail will take you back in time, passing historic buildings that date back to the late 1800s, as well as an array of colourful blooms in spring.
